History

Butler County was created by the first session of the Alabama legislature in 1819 from parts of Monroe and Conecuh Counties. It lies in the south-central part of the state in the Southeastern Plains Region, and borders Lowndes, Crenshaw, Covington, Conecuh, Monroe, and Wilcox counties. The county seat is located at Greenville, which was originally named Buttsville. Greenville is on I-65 about 45 miles southwest of Montgomery.
