History

Mobile County was formed from Baldwin County and West Florida by proclamation of Gov. Holmes of the Mississippi Territory in 1812. It is located in the southwestern corner of Alabama in the Southeastern Plains Region. Mobile County is bordered by the Alabama counties of Washington and Baldwin, the Mississippi counties of Greene, George and Jackson, and by Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The city of Mobile is the county seat. Courthouse fires occurred in 1823, 1840, and 1872. Other towns and communities include Citronelle, Bayou LeBatre, and Theodore. Mobile is on I-10 and I-65 about 175 miles southwest of Montgomery.
