History

Wilcox County was formed in 1819 from Monroe and Dallas counties. Located in the south-central part of the state, in the Black Belt part of the Southeastern Plains Region, Wilcox was a center of Alabama antebellum plantation life. Today it is largely agricultural and rural. The county seat of Wilcox County is Camden. Other towns include Lower Peach Tree (where the Culpeppers resided), Millers Ferry, Pine Apple and Snow Hill. Camden is 70 miles southwest of Montgomery and 120 miles NNW of Mobile. Wilcox County is bordered by the counties of Dallas, Lowndes, Butler, Monroe, Clarke and Marengo.

Newspapers: Montgomery Advertiser, Mobile Register, Wilcox Progressive Era (Camden)

Early Culpepper Settlers

The first Culpeppers known to have settled in Southwest Alabama were the families of Erasmus Culpepper II (#9465) and his nephew Benjamin Culpepper (#9495). Both families were from Nash Co., NC and first appear in Wilcox county records in connection with the marriage of Erasmus' daughter Cynthia to Menasses Philen on 19 Jul 1827. Both Erasmus' and nephew Benjamin's families appear in Wilcox in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. In 1833, Erasmus jointly acquired (with his son-in-law Simon Donald) a patent for 80 acres of land in the southwestern corner of the county in an area that became known as Lower Peach Tree. Benjamin and his family subsequently acquired patents for 40 acres of adjacent land in 1843, this land lying in the northeastern corner of Clarke County. Thus, Benjamin's further historical records appear in Clarke County

The family of Erasmus persisted in Wilcox County for another two generations. The last male heir of Erasmus II was his grandson, Earnest, who died in 1912 in Lower Peach Tree at the age of 63, unmarried.

Culpepper (Town), Wilcox Co., AL, on county road 1, 6 miles south of AL-5 and Pine Hill, about 90 miles NNE of Mobile and 90 miles WSW of Montgomery.

In 1837, two descendants of Erasmus Culpepper (1744-1783) of North Carolina settled in this immediate area: son, Erasmus, Jr. (1782-1855) and grandson, Benjamin (1795-1860), who was the son of Osborne Culpepper (1770-1807). The town is most probably named for these early settlers.

From a 31 Jul 2008 message to Chip Culpepper from Art Green (both Civil War buffs):
"Culpepper is on the road from Lower Peach Tree to Sunny South... BTW there were Confederate Fortifications at Oven Bluff on the Tombigbee that was near a salt works and a CS Navy Yard that outfitted one of the iron clads built in Selma. There was another Iron built at Oven Bluff but I don't believe ever saw service. Almost directly east on the west bank on the Alabama was Choctaw Bluff. There is still a great earthen star fort and a large Brook Selma mfg. Cannon on the river bank there. This is near the area marked as Condi on the attached map though I never heard of Condi. You can Google "Oven Bluff" and "Choctaw Bluff". My folks came from below Lower Peach Tree. Nice little county store near there, the folks fix lunch on Thur.sday and they ask the blessing before lunch. Owner is descended from 38th Alabama stock. Deer hunting country. The delta south of there runs all the way to Mobile bay about 50 miles only swamp."
