Clarke County
History
In the Piedmont Region of Georgia,
Clarke County was formed in 1801 from
Jackson County. Its county seat,
Athens, is home to the University of Georgia and is on
US-29/GA-316 about 60 miles east of Atlanta. Clarke is bordered by the counties of
Jackson,
Madison, Oglethorpe and
Oconee.
