History

In the Lower Coastal Plains Region of Georgia, Effingham County was formed in 1777 as an original county previously organized in 1758 as the Parishes of St. Matthew and St. Philip. Its county seat, Springfield, is about 175 miles southeast of Atlanta and 25 miles north of Savannah. Effingham is bordered by the Georgia counties of Chatham, Bryan, Bulloch and Screven, and the South Carolina counties of Hampton and Jasper.
