History

In the Piedmont Region of Georgia, Lincoln County was formed in 1796 from Wilkes County. Its county seat, Lincolnton, is on US-378 about 150 miles east of Atlanta and 35 miles northwest of Augusta. Lincoln is bordered by the Georgia counties of Elbert, Wilkes, Montgomery and McDuffie, and the South Carolina county of McCormick. The Savannah River, dammed since 1954 to form J. Strom Thurmond Lake, separates Lincoln County from South Carolina.
