Forrest County
County History
 An
act of the state legislature approved on April 19, 1906 called for the
creation of a new county to be called Forrest County, named for the
Confederate Cavalry leader, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. As of 2000,
Forrest County’s population was 72,604, and it is part of the
Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hattiesburg is
the county seat as well as the home of the University of Southern
Mississippi. The fourth
largest city in the state, Hattiesburg is centrally located less than 90
minutes from New Orleans and Mobile.
The US Army's Camp Shelby is located in Forrest County, south of
Hattiesburg. Other towns in Forrest County include Petal, Brooklyn, Carnes and
Fruitland Park. Forrest County is bordered by Jones County (northeast),
Perry County (east), Stone County (south),
Pearl River County
(southwest), Lamar County (west) and
Covington County (northwest).
