Charleston District/County

History

In the Carolina Low Country, today’s Charleston County was comprised in 1706 of all or part of the parishes of St. James Santee, St. Thomas/St. Denis, Christ Church, St. Michaels, St. Philips, St. Andrews, St. Johns Colleton and St. Pauls. In 1769, South Carolina was divided into seven judicial districts which served as governmental units. Charleston District was one of them. In 1785, Charleston was divided into six counties: Bartholomews, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Marion and Washington, but none of the counties became functional and they were abolished in 1798, at which time Charleston District was formed. In the 1790 census, Charleston District was divided up by parish. In 1868, Charleston District was designated Charleston County. Its county seat, the city of Charleston, is at the southern terminus of I-26, about 110 miles northeast of Savannah, GA and 110 miles southeast of Columbia. Charleston County is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, and the counties of Colleton, Dorchester, Berkeley and Georgetown.
