History

Claremont County was formed in 1785 as a county of Camden District. In 1791, parts of Claremont, Fairfield, Lancaster and Richland counties were carved off to form Kershaw County. In 1792, parts of Claremont and Clarendon were used to form Salem County, which then was placed in the Cheraws District. In 1798, the remaining parts of Claremont and Clarendon counties were merged to form Sumter District, and Claremont became extinct.
