South Carolina Culpepper Archives
Darlington District/County
History
In the eastern South
Carolina part of the Sand Hills region, the Darlington County
area was settled in the mid-eighteenth century by Welsh,
Scotch-Irish, and English farmers, who grew primarily cotton.
Darlington
County
was formed in
1785 from Cheraws District. In 1798, Cheraws
District was abolished and some of its counties, including Darlington,
became Districts. In 1868, Darlington District was designated Darlington
County. Parts of Darlington County were removed to
form Florence County in 1888 and Lee County in 1902. In recent years, the county has
been best known for the stock car races which take place at the Darlington Raceway. Its county seat, the town of Darlington, is on US-52, about 80
miles southeast of Charlotte, NC, and 70 miles ENE of Columbia.
Darlington County is bordered by the counties of
Chesterfield,
Marlboro, Florence, Lee
and Kershaw.
