On the Gulf coast in the Panhandle Region of Florida (aka Redneck Riviera), Franklin County was formed in 1832 from Jackson County. Its county seat, Apalachicola, is on US-98 about 65 miles southwest of Tallahassee and 140 miles east of Pensacola. Franklin is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and the counties of Gulf, Liberty and Wakulla.
