Baldwin Co., formed in 1803/1806 from Creek cessations, has Milledgeville as its county seat. It was named for the Rev. Abraham Baldwin, member of Congress from Georgia, from 1785 to 1788; Representative, from 1789 to 1799; Senator, from 1799-1807. Rev. Baldwin was the main chiefly instrumental in founding the University of Georgia and its head for 14 years.
