Charleston District was created in 1769 from the original Proprietary county of Berkeley. While in 1785, Charleston Co., along with five other counties, were created within Charleston District, the counties never became functional and in 1798 the counties were abolished. In 1868, Charleston District became Charleston County, and in 1882, much of Charleston Co. was carved off into Berkeley Co.
