Mary Ann Culpepper of Augusta, GA1

Female, #47676, (circa 1834 - )
Mother*Jane (?)1
Birth*circa 1834 She was born circa 1834 at Georgia.2
1840 Census1 Jun 1840 Mary was probably a free white female, age 5 and under 10, in Jane (?)'s household, on the 1840 Census on 1 Jun 1840 at Columbia Co., Georgia.3
1850 Census1 Jun 1850 Cassandra, Sarah, William, Mary, Julia, David and Thomas listed as a household member living with Jane (?) on the 1850 Census on 1 Jun 1850 at Richmond Co., Georgia.4
1860 Census1 Jun 1860 Cassandra, Andrew and Mary listed as a household member living with Sarah Ann Culpepper in the 1860 Census at Augusta, Richmond Co., Georgia.5
Research note Robert Culpepper apparently died before 1830 as his wife Jane appears as family head in the 1830 census, and his orphans were winners in the 1832 Georgia Gold Lottery. Since the 1840 and 1850 censuses show children in Jane's household who were born after 1830 (Mary Ann, Julia Ann, and David P.), it is not clear who their parents are. It is possible that Jane was the mother and the father was someone to whom she was not married. Or, these may be orphan children from another Culpepper family. Since the 1850 census does not state relationships, other records are needed to solve this mystery.

Wesley W. Huskey1

Male, #47681, (circa 1846 - )
Father*William T. Huskey1
Mother*Parmelia Culpepper1
Birth*circa 1846 He was born circa 1846 at Georgia.1
1850 Census1 Jun 1850 Parmelia, Trusannah, William, John, Ella, Wesley, Buler and Robert listed as a household member living with William T. Huskey on the 1850 Census on 1 Jun 1850 at Warren Co., Georgia.
(The baby Robert Culpepper shown in this household by the census is otherwise unaccounted for. It seems likely that Ella or Trusannah were not Culpeppers at birth but married William or John, and Robert was the son of this couple. It should also be noted that no girls appeared in Dickinson's HH in 1840 as age 5-10 (which would have been Ella's age bracket), and only 1 girl appeared as age 10-15 (but both Frances and Trusannah were in this bracket). Thus, it might best be assumed that both Ella and Trusannah were born to other parents and married Culpeppers. Given the relative ages, it seems most likely that Trusannah married William and Ella married John. Further, as they are the older couple, Trusannah and William are probably the parents of Robert. However, both John and William married other wives in the 1850's, so if either was the father of Robert and the husband of Trusannah or Ella, it appears that their first wife and child had both died within a few years.

Further complicating the matter, in the 1840 census their were no boys under the age of 15 in Dickinson's HH. Therefore, it would appear unlikely that either William or John were the children of Dickinson.)1

Death*before 1 Jun 1840 He died before 1 Jun 1840.8
Research note*23 May 2004 The ancestry of James Culpepper is unproven. He has been assigned to William and Martha Culpepper as parents because they are the most logical choices, as in the 1820 census they had an otherwise unidentified Male 16-26 in their household. However, James could be the son of William's brother Daniel. More research is needed.

Birth of Sonbetween 1825 and 1830 Her son John W. Culpepper of Laurens Co., GA was born between 1825 and 1830 at Laurens Co., Georgia.3

Miscellaneous*5 Jul 1830 Catherine Culpepper was allowed by court $3.00 per month for taking care of John W. Culpepper, an illegitimate child.3
Deed*Dec 1830 She granted a deed in Dec 1830 at Laurens Co., Georgia,

Katherin Culpepper & Winiford Culpepper to Blake Bridges for $50: 40 acres on Buckeye Creek, 2/5 of the 100 acres where Benjamin Culpepper (Katherin's deceased husband) formerly lived & part of 200 acres granted to John Culpepper (Benjamin's father) in Mar 1786. Wit: Wm. Joyce, Jas. Jones.4
1840 Census*1 Jun 1840 Catherine was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census on 1 Jun 1840 at Laurens Co., Georgia.
(Unaccounted for are 1 male 0-5, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female 20-30.)5
Death*before 1 Jun 1850 She died before 1 Jun 1850.
Research note*15 May 2004 It is speculated that the name of Catherine's husband was Benjamin on the basis that:
     (1) "Benjamin's Orphans" from Laurens Co. were favorable drawers in the 1832 Gold lottery. They won Lot 1096 in Section 3, District 17. The land was in Bartow (originally Cass) County. Records there should be checked for the sale of this land.
     (2) In Dec 1830, Catherine and Winiford Culpepper sold land on Buckeye Creek where Benjamin formerly lived. This land was part of an original grant to John Culpepper
No Benjamin is otherwise known who fits this profile. All we know about Catherine is from her appearance as a widow with children in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses of Laurens Co., plus the Dec 1830 deed.
There is also no proof that Benjamin is the son of John and Mary Culpepper. However, the Dec 1830 deed makes it clear that Benjamin had lived on land originally granted to John. [W.L.C.]

Benjamin Culpepper, Georgia Militia, Freeman's Squadron's Cavalry.)2
Death*before 1820 He died before 1820
Perhaps Benjamin died in the war.
Land Lottery*1832 Benjamin was the deceased whose orphan(s) had a fortunate draw in the land lottery in 1832 at Laurens Co., Georgia,
lot 1096/17/3 in what became Cass Co., GA, now Bartow Co., GA.3

Book J, page 172. Winiford is assumed to be a daughter of Catherine and Benjamin based upon this deed in which she and Catherine sold land formerly belonging to the deceased Benjamin. Also, there were two otherwise unaccounted for females, age 20-30, in Catherine's household in the 1830 census. One was probably Winiford.
