Death*11 Sep 2017 She died at Athens, Clarke Co., Georgia, on 11 Sep 2017 at age 97.5
Obituary*24 Sep 2017 Athens - Mrs. Warren A. Thrasher, 97, died peacefully surrounded by her family's love, on September 11, 2017, at her home in Athens, GA. Born on October 16, 1919, in her family's home on North Scott Street in Camilla, GA, Caroline Amanda Burson was the beloved daughter of Judge Benjamin Thomas Burson and Annie Lucile Culpepper Burson. She was the fourth of five children and was preceded in death by her three sisters and one brother; Temperance Elizabeth Burson Lear, Harriette Clare Burson, Mary Lucy Burson Decker, and Benjamin Thomas Burson, Jr.

Caroline Amanda Burson spent her childhood with a loving family enjoying idyllic small-town life. Caroline graduated from Camilla Consolidated High School at 16 and along with excited college-bound classmates, rode the train from South Georgia to Athens to attend the University of Georgia. As a freshman, she lived on UGA's Coordinate Campus in Winnie Davis Hall whose house mother was Moina Michael, the Poppy Lady. Caroline was a charter member of the Georgia Alpha chapter of Pi Beta Phi fraternity for women and was selected as the sorority's most outstanding pledge. She became the first initiate, served as the first president and was a member of the Panhellenic Council. She was an accomplished fencer, enjoyed archery and field hockey, and was a member of the Women's Athletic Association. After graduating from UGA in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, she took a job traveling 1,000 miles a week as Assistant District Supervisor with the school lunch program in Georgia because she had promised her late father that she would work a year before she married. Fearing an elaborate garden wedding, her college sweetheart, Lieutenant Warren Atticus Thrasher, asked her to elope on December 26, 1940, to Tallahassee, FL. Caroline agreed saying, "I will, but you can't tell Mama!" In June 1941 in a second ceremony, she and Warren married with family present at the First United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN.

During World War II while her husband was serving in the First Armored Division in North Africa and later as Aide-de-Camp to General Mark Clark with Fifth Army Headquarters in Italy, Caroline returned to her childhood home in Camilla to teach sixth and seventh grade. After the war, Caroline and Warren were happily reunited. Caroline spent 27 years as a devoted army officer's wife during her husband's distinguished military career. The couple lived in 15 posts in the United States, as well as two years in Tehran, Iran.

In 1963 Colonel and Mrs. Thrasher were delighted to return to Athens and to the University of Georgia where Colonel Thrasher served four years as Professor of Military Science and 17 years as Professor of Management in the Business School at UGA. Caroline, with her husband and children, joined the First United Methodist Church in Athens. She served faithfully and cheerfully in leadership roles in her Circle, in the Altar Guild, and as president of United Methodist Women. She enjoyed membership in the Bobbin Mill Garden Club, The University Women's Club, UGA President's Club, Athens Country Club, the Retired Officers Association, and the Athens Roadrunners. A Diamond Arrow-75 year member of Pi Beta Phi, she served countless hours with the Alumna Advisory Committee and House Corporation.

Caroline was a faithful, happy person, a nurturing homemaker, a lovely pianist, and like her mother before her, a marvelous cook. Born to a family of storytellers, she loved to read the newspaper. Her uncle Oscar Culpepper was owner and Publisher of the Camilla Enterprise, and her Aunt Clare Culpepper was Associate Editor and became Publisher. Her sister Harriette was Associate Editor, and her brother Thomas Burson later became Editor and Publisher.

Her greatest loves were her husband of 68 years, their four children, their six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Caroline Burson Thrasher is the widow of Colonel Warren Atticus Thrasher. She is survived by two sons and two daughters: Warren Atticus Thrasher, Jr. and wife Emily of Savannah, GA; John Paul Thrasher and wife Paula of Newnan, GA; Sue Quillian Thrasher of Watkinsville, GA; and Peggy Thrasher Law and husband Don of Watkinsville, GA. She has six beloved grandchildren: Warren Dean Thrasher and wife Paula, Clare McGrath Golding and husband James, Amanda Thrasher Hobbs and husband Matt, Jennifer Anne McGrath, Caroline Thrasher Tietjen and husband Tim, and Donald McLaren Law. She was blessed with three great-grandchildren: Grace Thrasher, Corin Golding, and Felix Golding. She leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews, as well as beloved caregiver, Tammy Muckle.

A gracious and Godly woman with a kind heart, Caroline loved unconditionally and radiated a strong Christian faith which anchored her family in good times and bad. Beloved by all who knew her, we can best honor her memory by practicing those virtues that defined her life: Christian stewardship, love of family, and the ability to find joy and fulfillment in serving others. Thankful for the example of a life well-lived, we celebrate the homecoming of Caroline Amanda Burson Thrasher. She will be missed.

A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of the Athens First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 2:00 pm, the Reverend Chuck Hodges, and the Reverend Martha Aenchbacher officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception in the John Wesley Parlor after the service. Mrs. Thrasher will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her late husband Colonel Warren Atticus Thrasher, who was buried with full Military Honors in 2008. If you would like to make a donation in lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Altar Guild of Athens First United Methodist Church, or to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation.5
