History

Covington County was formed in 1821 from Henry County and subsequently gave up land to Crenshaw and Conecuh counties. It is located in the south-central part of the state in the Southeastern Plains Region. The southwestern portion of the county contains the Conecuh National Forest. Covington is bordered by Escambia, Conecuh, Butler, Crenshaw, Coffee and Geneva counties, and to the south by the Florida counties of Okaloosa and Walton. The county seat was first established at Montezuma, but when it was devastated by flood in 1841, the county seat was established on higher ground in a new town called Andalusia. Other towns include Opp, Red Level, and Florala. Andalusia is on US-29 and US-84, about 90 miles south of Montgomery and 125 miles northeast of Mobile.

Newspapers: Andalusia Star News, Montgomery Advertiser, Mobile Register
