Etowah County

History
Etowah
County was created in 1866 from parts of Marshall,
DeKalb, Cherokee,
Calhoun, St. Clair and
Blount counties, and these counties form its borders
today. It lies in the northeastern section of the state in the Appalachian Ridge
and Valley Region. Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain are located in Etowah
County. Gadsden, the county seat, is on I-65 about 60 miles northeast of
Birmingham, 60 miles southeast of Huntsville, and 90 miles southwest of
Chattanooga, TN. Other towns and communities include Attalla and Rainbow City.
