Walker County
History
In the Appalachian Ridge and
Valley Region of Georgia,
Walker County was formed in 1833 from
Murray County. Its county seat,
Lafayette, is on
US-27 about 100 miles northwest of Atlanta and 25 miles south of Chattanooga,
TN. Walker is bordered by the Georgia counties of
Dade, Catoosa,
Whitfield, Gordon and
Chattooga, the Alabama county of
DeKalb, and the Tennessee county of Hamilton.

Note by Warren Culpepper: It appears that quite a
few people who resided elsewhere married in Walker Co., GA. I recall that
during the 1950's and 1960's, Ringgold, GA (in adjacent Catoosa County)
was a destination for many teenage couples from Alabama and Tennessee who
"ran off" to marry without their parents permission. So perhaps, Walker
County was also such a destination. If so, it is also possible that some
of the ages below were exaggerated in order to secure a marriage license.
