Newton County
        
      
		County History
      
		
		 Newton County, 
		originally part of Choctaw lands, was established in 1836 from the lower 
		half of Neshoba County . By the year 1837 there were in the county 1,506 
		whites and 426 slaves. By 1850 the population had increased to 4,465 and 
		by 1870 to 10,067. The County Courthouse and most of its records were 
		destroyed by fire in 1877. As of 2000, Newton County's population was 
		21,838. The county seat is Decatur and the largest town is Union. 
		Adjacent counties are Neshoba County (north),
		Lauderdale County (east), 
		Jasper County (south) and Scott County (west).
