Wilbarger County
County History and Geography
In the Rolling
Plains Region of the Texas Panhandle, Wilbarger
County was formed in 1858 (organized 1881) from
Cooke
County. Its county seat,
Vernon,
is on the Red River and US-287, about 170 miles NW of Fort Worth. Wilbarger is bordered by the
Texas counties
of Wichita, Baylor, Foard and
Hardeman, and the Oklahoma counties of
Jackson and Tillman.
