He was born in Elizabeth City, NC on June 28, 1922 to the late William Thomas Culpepper and the late Alice Butler Culpepper. Mr. Culpepper was a former Pasquotank County Commissioner, and also served as Mayor for Elizabeth City, NC from 1957 until 1964. In 1964 he became Postmaster for the Elizabeth City branch of the USPS which position he held until 1987. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Culpepper served in World War II in the southwest Pacific and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in the US Army Engineers in 1946. Upon returning from the military, he entered the family connected businesses, serving as a corporate officer in the Carolina Amusement Co. Inc. and the Carolina-Virginia Amusement Corp.
Mr. Culpepper was very civic and community minded and was member of several fraternal and civic organizations. He was a member, past president and a Paul Harris Fellow with the Elizabeth City Rotary Club having been named Rotarian of the Year for his many dedicated years of service. He was a charter and life member of the VFW #6060, member or the Eureka Lodge #317 AF & AM, member of the Sudan Shrine Temple in New Bern, NC, and member of The Pines Country Club. Mr. Culpepper was a Charter member and Past President of the Elizabeth City Jaycees and past State Vice President for the North Carolina Jaycees. He was a former board of directors member of Wachovia Bank and Trust, Elizabeth City Foundation, Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City State University Foundation, and Elizabeth City Boys Club. Throughout his public career, Mr. Culpepper received various awards including being the only person selected twice as Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the EC Jaycees. Also, he was named as "Tar Heel of the Week" by the Raleigh News and Observer newspaper, named as Trustee Emeritus of Elizabeth City State University and, in 2005, he was presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award.
Mr. Culpepper is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jane Aydlett Culpepper, a daughter, Nancy C. Spruill and husband, Walt of Manteo, NC; a son, Stephen Hall Culpepper and wife, Gail of Southern Shores, NC, three grandchildren, Jane Hunter Spruill, Stephen Tyler Culpepper, and Anna Catherine Culpepper. Also, surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine C. Hudgins.
A service to celebrate the life of Levin Culpepper will be held Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 2:00pm in First Baptist Church by Rev. Christopher Ingram. A gathering of family and friends will be Saturday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm in Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church Street.

I knew Edwin Culpepper. He lived in his father Jessie's house on the farm on Backwoods Road. If he married twice and had children I am unaware of it.
Edwin played the accordion. When I was a child he entertained us on Saturday evenings at Uncle William Andrew Powers home (son of Cornelius Powers and Amanda McPherson). William lived on the adjoining farm.
Edwin deeded the home place to Susannah Powers Etheridge. Susannah's son, Grandy Etheridge built a home on the property and his widow, Bell (Silvester) Etheridge, lives there.
Jakey Anne Powers, daughter of Machrista Powers (listed Christopher C. Powers in 1850 census) and Jane Culpepper married Caleb Powers, son of William and Elizabeth Powers, on 28 December 1885, in Moyock Township by J.(John) Humphries, Sr.
According to census Caleb and JakeyAnne had 5 children. I only know of 2:
Child #1: Annie M.(Matilda) Powers married William Etheridge McPherson,(24 Dec.1869-May 1942) son of Noah Oliver McPherson and Mary Anne Powers. (Noah was brother of Andrew McPherson who married Martha Culpepper)

Here are my remembrances of my Grandfather, Jesse Edwin Culpepper, (9/29/1864-6/4/1936). Since I was born on October 2, 1927, my life and his did not overlap very much.:
I have read the year 2000 report of Alice Doak. Jesse had two sons not mentioned in Alice's report: Linwood Martin Culpepper who was born on October 7, 1898 in Currituck County, NC and died on July 25, 1957 in the Veterans Hospital at Roanoke, VA. Linwood had an older brother, Edwin, about whom I know little except that he was a "Revenuer" back in the days of prohibition. I know this because as a child, I accompanied him on a trip around Currituck County during which he destroyed two illegal stills. He wore a uniform and carried a pistol. I was 6 or 7 years old at the time. My father, Linwood served in the Navy in WW I and later was employed as an engineer on a coastwise tug named the Eureka. I went with him in June, 1939 on a trip from Norfolk, VA to Rockland, ME.
My father and I stayed with Jesse on the farm in Moyock, NC for several months because my father was unemployed at the time. My mother, nee Madge Hazel Parker (February 5, 1904 - April 14, 1949), was living with her parents on the family farm in Fentress, VA. After Jesse left the farm, he opened a blacksmith shop in Hickory, VA, a little village not far from Moyock. Again, I had to stay with him because my father was unemployed. Jesse was a competent blacksmith as I recall and could quickly make an iron rim for a wagon wheel. I used to operate the bellows for him...
I last saw Jesse when he was ailing and living in a little apartment in Norfolk, VA.8 |
